Mrs. Hurshel Ray, 45, Ex-Countian, Dies
Sacramento - Mrs. Cherry Ray, 45, Sacramento Route 1, died at 4:45 p.m. Monday at the Hopkins County Hospital in Madisonville after a long illness.
She was born Aug. 24, 1915, in Muhlenberg County.
Survivors include her husband, Hershel Ray, Sacramento; three daughters, Mrs. Norman Harper, Central City, Mrs. Gerald Abrams, Assara, Kans., and Miss Gaye Ray, Sacramento; four brothers, Robert and E.T. Drake, both of Bremen, Barnes Drake, Owensboro, and Hobert Drake, Maceo; four grandchildren.
Funeral services were conducted at 2 p.m. Thursday in Calhoun.
Burial was in Station Cemetery in McLean County.

Mrs. Laura Hibbs Redfern, 74, of North Third Street, Central City, died at 10 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 28 in the Muhlenberg Community Hospital.
Born June 5, 1895 in Hopkins County, she was a retired clerk and a member of the Central City Church of God of Prophecy.
Survivors include two daughters, Mrs. Grace Ellen Nalley and Mrs. Ida Stirsman Cotton of Central City; three grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren and nine great-great-grandchildren; half-sister, Mrs. Ida Belle Brown of Madisonville.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Sunday at the Tucker Funeral Home with the Rev. Arnold Harper officiating, assisted by the Rev. Sonny James. Burial was in Fairmount Cemetery.

Greenville, Ky. - Mary Ella Mitchell Reynolds, 92, of Greenville died at 4:30 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 5, 2000, at Bellemeade Nursing Rehabilitation Center. She was born in Greenville.
She graduated from Greenville Training School as the class valedictorian. She received a teaching certificate from Western Ky. Industrial College in Paducah, Ky., and taught in the Red River community in Robinson County near Springfield, Tenn. She earned a lifetime teaching certificate from the state of Kentucky. She attended beauty school in Indianapolis, Ind., and received a beautician license. She was a member of First Baptist Church where she taught Sunday school for many years. She was president of the Baptist Training Union for 30 years and was a past president of the missionaries. She was also a deaconess and church clerk for more than 30 years.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Edgar T. Reynolds. She is survived by one daughter, Ola R. Grigsby of Mounds, Ill.; one son, Edgar O. Reynolds of Greenville; two sisters, Kathryn Taylor and Naomi Render, both of Madisonville; five grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Services will be 1 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 8, 2000, at First Missionary Baptist Church in Greenville with the Rev. Michael Hardy officiating. Burial will be in West End Cemetery. Friends may call the church from 10:45 until 12:45 on Saturday.

Central City - Mrs. Verdie Mae Rhoades, 83, died Thursday, July 31, at 10:45 p.m. at the Regional Medical Center in Madisonville.
Mrs. Rhoades was born in Muhlenberg County on July 18, 1897 and was a member of the Cherry Hill Baptist Church.
Survivors include her two sons, Joe of Bremen and J.E. of Central City; three daughters, Mrs. Mae Wiggins, Mrs. Gyneth Stovall and Mrs. Mary Wilkins, all of Central City; 12 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren; two brothers, Bob Noffsinger and Herman Noffsinger, both of Central City; four sisters, Mrs. Bertha Allen of Central, Mrs. Mary Spears of Powderly, Mrs. Alma Jernigan and Mrs. Mareen Mercer, both of Greenville.
Funeral services were held Sunday, August 3, at 2 p.m. at the Tucker Funeral Home in Central City with the Rev. Richard Shockley officiating. Burial was in the Shaver's Chapel Cemetery.

Widow of E. Rice Dies At Santa Monica, Calif.
The body of Mrs. Bell Rice, widow of E. Rice, former citizen of Greenville, who died at her home at Santa Monica, Calif., will be brought to Greenville Sunday. Funeral services will be held from the Greenville Baptist church, Monday.
Mr. and Mrs. Rice left Greenville nearly 30 years ago for California. Mr. Rice was a widely known manufacturer of tobacco at Greenville. A married daughter resided in California and a son, Yewell Rice, lives in Cincinnati.

Cpl. Lawrence Ray Rice, son of Mr. and Mrs. Frank Rice of Midland community, who died overseas on December 20, 1943, is buried on Corsica Island, somewhere near the Isle of Capree.
A picture of Cpl. Rice's grave has been received by his parents, from Charley Doss, a former resident of Stringtown community, who now resides in Lafayette, Ind. Cpl. Rice's grave was located by Mr. Doss' son, Staff Sgt. Mayward M. Doss, who is in the Air Corps.
Cpl. Ray landed overseas in April, 1943.
Another son of Mr. and Mrs. Rice, Wallace Darrell, is in Belgium.

Death of Depoy Man.
A funeral service for Elijah Richey, 96 years old, who died at his home near Depoy, at 5 o'clock Monday morning, was held at the home at 2:30 o'clock Tuesday afternoon, and burial was in the cemetery at Vernal Grove church.

Forest J. Rife, 67, of Beaver Dam, died Wednesday, June 18, 2003, at his home.
He retired from Peabody Coal Co. and was a member of Barnes Chapel United Methodist Church in Beaver Dam.
Survivors include his wife, Margie Hunt Rife; three sons, Anthony Jones, David Rife and Jeffrey Rife; four daughters, Venessa Robinson, Bernestine Jones, Jennifer Rife and Kimberly Townsend; a brother, Claude Rife; and three sisters, Perline Mason, Carolyn Reed and Helen Chambers.
Services were Saturday at William L. Danks Funeral Home in Beaver Dam with burial in West End Cemetery in Greenville.

Lucile Roark
Graham - Lucile Roark, 91, of Route 1, Graham, died Monday, June 21, 1993, at Muhlenberg Community Hospital in Greenville. She was born in Muhlenberg County and was a member of East Union Baptist Church.
Survivors include a son, John Roark of Pittsburgh; two daughters, Mrs. Betty Ray of Central City and Mrs. Patsy Dukes of Graham; five grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and a sister, Mrs. Beatrice Miller of Greenville.
Services are at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Gary's Funeral Home, Greenville. Burial in East Union Cemetery in Muhlenberg County. Visitation from 6-8 p.m. today at the funeral home.
Funeral Services For Powderly Man Friday
A funeral service for Charlie A. Roberts, 45 years old, who died at his home at Powderly at 10 o'clock Thursday morning, was held, at Carter's Creek church at 4 o'clock Friday afternoon, conducted by the Rev. John Grigsby. Burial was in the church cemetery. Surviving are the widow, one son, two daughters, four brothers and two sisters.

Drakesboro - Ernest Clifton Robinson, 71, died in Hopkins County Hospital Monday, Feb. 13, at 7:45 a.m. He was a retired miner. Born in Muhlenberg County March 15, 1906, he was a member of Drakesboro United Methodist Church.
He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Bertha Robinson of Drakesboro; son, Thomas Clifton Robinson of Drakesboro; two daughters, Mrs. Mary Ann Fulcher of Beechmont and Mrs. Myra Lynn Smith of Ennis; five grandchildren; five sisters, Mrs. Evelyn Kimmel of Bisbee, Ariz., Mrs. Iva Lou Day and Mrs. Julia James of Chicago, Mrs. Charlotte Hinton of Louisville and Mrs. Margaret Nell Williams of Drakesboro.
Services will be today (Wednesday) at 2 p.m. at Tucker-Beechmont Funeral Home, conducted by the Rev. Odie Wright, with burial in Ebenezer Cemetery.

Terry Robinson, 20
Drakesboro - Terry Robinson 20, Negro, died March 19, 1956 after a lingering illness. He was a graduate of Drakesboro Community High School in the Class of 1955, and was a member of the basketball team.
He is survived by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Edgar Robinson; two brothers, Roscoe and Richard; grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Lewis Cartwright, all of Drakesboro; grandfather, William Robinson, Cleaton.
Funeral services were March 21 at the Morgantown Methodist Church, the Rev. J.L. Carter officiating. Pallbearers were members of the basketball team at Community High. Burial was at Rochester.

Oldest Citizen In County Dies At the Age of 110
The death on September 18th of Uncle Winton Robinson, one of the oldest colored citizens in Muhlenberg county, probably the last slave negro residing in Central City. Winton Robinson was born in Virginia, near Withville, on June 25, 1822, as a slave of the family of McTear. His master, Rev. McTear, made two trips to Central City to visit Robinson after he removed to this city 50 years ago.
Robinson was married during slavery to Caroline Newton and two children were born during slavery; afterward they moved to Tennessee where ten children were born, [six of] whom, three sons, James, William and John Robinson, of this city, three daughter, Mollie Smith, Whiteville, Tenn.; Nelly Kirtley, Indianapolis, Ind., and Lottie Mills, of this city, survive him. Thirty-four grandchildren and six great grandchildren also survive.
Uncle Winton Robinson spent 60 years of his life as a minister of the gospel, being a member of the Primitive Baptist church. His health had been excellent until about two weeks before his death.
He was buried at the Crawford cemetery here on September 19.

Greenville - Edna Shelton Hunter Rogers, 79, of Greenville died Friday, October 25, 2002 at her residence.
The Rhodes Chapel native was a member of Wesley Chapel AME Zion Church in Greenville, where she served on the stewardess board, Ada B. George Missionary Society, was a class leader, former Sunday School teacher, an usher and a member of the Don't Mention Club. She was preceded in death by two husbands.
Survivors include a daughter, Sandra Harbin, of Greenville; two grandsons; two brothers, Floyd Shelton and Benjamin Shelton, both of Greenville; a sister, Elsie McCravy of Louisville; several nephews and nieces; and several cousins.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, October 29, at Wesley Chapel AME Zion Church in Greenville. Burial followed in West End Cemetery in Greenville. Expressions of sympathy may take the form of donations to Green River Hospice. Mason & Sons Funeral Home in Madisonville was in charge of arrangements.

Central City - Mary Louise Roll, 92, [born 17 June 1900] of Central City died Saturday, July 25, 1992, in Owensboro. She was born in Muhlenberg County, was a homemaker and was a member of Nelson Creek Baptist Church.
Survivors include two sons, J.T. Roll of Central City and Tom Roll of Slaughters; three daughters, Eula Mae Bastin and Jewell Roll, both of Owensboro and Betty Staples of Hopkinsville; 18 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; 2 great-great-grandchildren and a sister Allie Long of Louisville.
Services are at 2 p.m. today at Tucker Funeral Home, Central City. Burial in Rose Hill Cemetery, Central City.
Thomas L.(Curg) Roll 77 died at 9 p.m. Saturday [March 18, 1972] at Muhlenberg Community Hospital. Born in Texas he was a retired miner.
Survivors include his wife. Mrs. Louise (Heck) Roll; three daughters, Mrs. Eula Mae Bastin of Owensboro, Mrs. Arthur Staples of Hopkinsville and Mrs. Don Phelps of Providence; two sons, Joseph T. of Bremen and Tommy of Sanford, FL; 19 grandchildren; 8 great-grandchildren; three brothers, Mike of Sacramento, KY, Clarence of Del Rio, TX, and Joe of San Antonio, TX.
Services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Monday at Parker-Washburne-Pannel Funeral Home by the Rev. W.R. Cook, pastor First Baptist Church, Central City. Burial will be in Rose Hill Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home.

Last Rites Held For Fire Victim
Former Greenville Woman Who Lost Life In Fire at Morganfield Buried at Greenville.
A funeral service for Mrs. Jean Duncan Rose, 65 years old, formerly of Greenville, who lost her life in a hotel fire at Morganfield early last Saturday morning, was held from the residence of Mr. and Mrs. W.H. Brizendine, at Greenville, Wednesday afternoon at 3 o'clock. Burial was in Evergreen cemetery.
Mrs. Rose removed from Greenville to Providence several years ago, and she went from Providence to Morganfield to become manager of the dining room at the hotel where she lost her life.
Surviving are one daughter, Mrs. W.H. Brizendine, of Greenville, and one son, Duncan Stevens, of Redlands, California.

Mrs. Olinda Ruester, 60, Beechmont, Dies
Beechmont - Mrs. Olinda C. Ruester, 60, died Monday, March 18 at 11:30 a.m. in the Muhlenberg Community Hospital. She was an elementary school teacher in New Athens, Ill., but had been ill for several weeks and was visiting her daughter, Mrs. John Houghland, in Beechmont. She was a member of the United Church of Christ in Lenzburg, Ill.
She is survived by a son, L.A. Ruester of Detroit, Mich.; daughter, Mrs. John Houghland of Beechmont; three brothers, Henry Beimfohr of Madison, Ill., Elmer Beimfohr of Maschoutah, Ill., twin brother, Alfred Beimfohr of Okawville, Ill.; sister, Mrs. Annie Walters of New Athens, Ill.; five grandchildren.

James W. Russ, 94, To Be Buried April 23
James William Russ, 94, of Central City, died Wednesday, April 20, at 8:20 p.m. in Masonic Home in Shelbyville.
He was born in Butler county on March 17, 1872, and was a member of Nelson Creek Baptist Church and the N.H. Shaw Masonic Lodge at Nortonville.
Surviving are four daughters, Mrs. Ruth Slaton of Evansville, Mrs. Lucille Haltacer(?) of Hawthorne, Calif., Mrs. Ester Webster of Topeka, Kans., and Mrs. Letha Slaton of Plant City, Fla.; son, James Monroe Ross of Gary Heights, Mich.; nine grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; two brothers, T.A. Russ of Central City and Jerry Russ of Madisonville.
Services will be Saturday, April 23 at 10 a.m. with Rev. Rubert Utley of Madisonville in charge, assisted by the Rev. Irian Snyder, pastor of Nelson Creek Baptist Church. Burial will be in Madisonville Memorial Gardens.

Cleaton - John Rutledge, Negro, was stricken suddenly at his home Jan. 18, 1956 and died in the Muhlenberg Community Hospital Jan. 20, 1956.
Funeral services were held at Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church, of which he was a member. He had served in many official capacities and was an active deacon at the time of death. The Rev. C.L. Jones, ex-pastor, officiated at the funeral Jan. 23.
Survivors include wife, Mrs. Henrietta Rutledge; a stepson, George Wilson of Louisville; two step-grandchildren.
Burial was in Cleaton Community Cemetery.

Cleaton - Tom Rutledge, Negro, 76, died in his home in Cleaton.
Funeral services were held at Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church with the Rev. C.L. Jones pastor, officiating.
Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Emma Rutledge, three daughters, Mrs. Verna Fletcher of Mt. Sterling, Mrs. Opal Tribble, and Mrs. Mary Garrett, both of Lexington; four sons, Clint, Howard and Sam of Louisville and James of Cleaton; 14 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
