Two Men Killed At Powderly Mine
Claude Heltsley, 34, and George Maddox, 24, Victims of Slate Fall.
Two young men lost their lives at noon Tuesday when caught by falling slate in the mine of the Greenville Coal Company at Powderly. They were Claude Heltsley, 34 years old and George Maddox, 24 years old, both living at Powderly. They were engaged in repairing a trolley line not far from the main entrance, when falling slate crushed them, and it is thought, killed them instantly.
Their bodies were brought to Greenville to M.B. McDonald, funeral director, and prepared for burial. The double funeral service was held at the Baptist Church at Greenville at 3:20 o'clock Wednesday, the Rev. L.P. Whittaker, of Bremen, in charge. Interment followed in Evergreen cemetery.
The crowd of friends and relatives filled to overflowing the local church and the floral offering was very beautiful.
Heltsley is survived by his widow, his parents Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Heltsley, of Powderly, and one sister, Mrs. Lucien Keys, Central City. Twelve years ago a younger brother was accidentally drowned in the lake at Powderly.
Maddox is survived by his parents Mr. and Mrs. Edward Maddox, of Powderly, and
four brothers and two sisters.

Dorothy May Mann, 89, died Friday, Feb. 4, 2005 at Maple Manor Health Care in Greenville.
Born in Providence Dec. 4, 1915, she was a retired clerk from Ben Franklin and a member of the First Christian Church in Central City. She was preceded in death by her husband, Joseph G. Mann in 1971 and a granddaughter, Sarah Beth Jarvis in 1994.
Survivors include a son, Joe Mann of Council Grove, Kan.; a daughter, Frances Jarvis of Central City; a sister, Ada Roberts of Macon, Ga.; three grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Feb. 6 at Tucker Funeral Home with the Rev. Joe Mann and the Rev. C.W. Duncan officiating. Burial followed in Fairmount Cemetery in Central City.

Ex-Resident Killed In Chicago June 2
Estil Clay Mansfield, 22, formerly of Central City, was killed in Chicago at 11:05 p.m. Saturday. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Dovey.
A veteran of two year's service in the Army, he was a truck driver in Chicago. He was born in Greenville March 3, 1927.
He is survived by his parents, Mr. Guy Mansfield of Dayton, Ohio and Mrs. Lucy Kaniski of Chicago; grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Ivory Millsaps of Central City

Mrs. Mattie Mansfield
Mrs. Mattie Mansfield, 79 years old, died at her home near Weir last Sunday night, following a protracted illness from old age complications. Burial was at Clifty Monday afternoon.

Death of Horse Causes Suicide
Estil Mathis Worried After His Team Had Been Struck By Truck; Shoots Himself In Head
Funeral services for Estil Mathis, 40 years old, who died at his home at Greenville at 10:30 o'clock Wednesday morning from a self-inflicted pistol wound were held today.
Mr. Mathis shot himself through the head at 10 o'clock Wednesday morning at his home. He lived 30 minutes after he shot himself it was stated. The coroner's jury returned a verdict of suicide.
Last Saturday night, as Mr. Mathis was returning to his home with a team and wagon, one of his horses was struck by a truck and so badly injured it that it had to be killed. It was said that the incident weighed heavily upon his mind and that he had talked considerably about it.
Surviving Mr. Mathis are the widow and two sons and one daughter.

Veteran I.C.R.R. Switchman Succumbs
J.R. (Shiloh) Mathis Succumbs At Home On Third Street Tuesday Morning.
J.R. (Shiloh) Mathis, 65 years old, a veteran employe of the Illinois Central railroad, died at his home in Third street at 8:30 o'clock Tuesday morning of complications, after being confined to his home for about two weeks. He had been in declining health for several months, but his condition was not considered serious until a short time age.
Mr. Mathis moved to Central City from Cecilia, Ky., about 30 years ago. His many friends and acquaintances _______ of his passing as he was always jovial and happy and during his time as switchman made many friends in railroad circles, as well as others whom he came in contact, or ______ with.
In addition to his widow, three children survive, Mrs. William Davis, _____ Mathis and Alfred Mathis, all of _______.
Mr. Mathis was a member of St. ______ church from where funeral services were conducted at 10:30 [o'clock] Wednesday morning, the Rev. __________ officiating. Interment was in Fairmount cemetery.

Former Muhlenberg Pastor Dies At Jeffersontown, Ky.
The Rev. Lloyd K. May, 57 years old, Jeffersontown, Ky., former pastor of the Greenville Methodist church, died at 10 o'clock Saturday morning at St. Anthony's Hospital. He was a member of the Louisville Conference for twenty-seven years and was presiding elder of the Owensboro District for four years.
He is survived by his mother, his wife, a daughter and two sons.
Funeral services were held Monday morning at the Jeffersontown Methodist church. Several from Greenville attended the funeral.

Moorman Native Dies In Louisville
Mrs. Mildred Melton, 24, native of Moorman, died at her home in Louisville Saturday, Sept. 21, after an illness of one year. Funeral services were held Monday at the Ebenezer Church with Rev. B.F. Bingham officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery. Tucker Funeral Home was in charge of the funeral arrangements.
Wife of Delford Melton, Mrs. Melton was born Aug. 8, 1922 in Moorman. She is survived by her husband, Delford Melton; mother, Verna Mae Buskill; son, David Earl Melton and four brothers and four sisters.

Greenville - Mareen Mercer, 91, died Friday, Feb. 12, 2010 at her residence.
Born in Muhlenberg County Sept. 3, 1918, she was the daughter of the late J.B. and Betty Noffsinger. She was a homemaker and retired as head cook at Longest Elementary School. She and her late husband owned and operated Mercer's Grocery in Nebo for many years. An active member of Duvall's Chapel General Baptist Church, she served as a Sunday school teacher and loved to sing in the choir. She was preceded in death by her husband, R.T. Mercer; two grandson, Brandon Steele and Doug Mercer; four brothers; and four sisters.
Survivors include two sons, Tommy (Pauline) Mercer and Johnny (Diane) Mercer; four daughters, Wilda Faye (Legon) McDonald, Linda (Robbie) Steele, Joan (Ralph) Bethel and Frances Davis; 14 grandchildren; 30 great-grandchildren; and eight [great] great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held at 1 p.m. Feb. 15 at Duvall's Chapel General Baptist Church in Greenville with Dr. Curtis Yarbrough and the Rev. Kenneth Miller officiating. Burial followed in Nebo Cemetery in Greenville.

Nelson Boyd Mercer Dies in California
Los Angeles, Calif. - Nelson Boyd Mercer, 58, died Feb. 27 in a veteran's hospital in Log Angeles, Calif., following an illness of several months. He was a native of Rochester and the son of the last W.S. Mercer of Rochester.
Funeral services were conducted Thursday, March 2 at 1 p.m. from the Little Chapel of the Dawn in Santa Monica, Calif. with the Rev. Robert E. Palmer officiating. Burial was in Ivy Lawn Memorial Park, Ventura, Calif.
He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Helen Mercer of Los Angeles; two brothers, a twin, Boyce Mercer of Detroit, Mich., Raymond Mercer of Central City; stepmother, Mrs. Elizabeth Mercer of Greenville; five half sisters, Mrs. Tom Ford and Mrs. Elgan Strader of Greenville, Mrs. J.B. Gardner and Mrs. John Stedge of Anchorage, Mrs. Cody Yates of Utica; half-brother, W.W. Mercer of Middletown, Rhode Island.

Clay H. Middleton, 94, World War II vet, dies
Greenville - Clay Hershel Middleton, 94, of Louisville, died Sunday, March 5 at VA Medical Center, Louisville.
He was born Jan. 20, 1895 in Rosewood, was a retired farmer and coal miner, and was a member of Luzerne Baptist Church. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War I [sic].
Survivors include seven sons, Jim B. Middleton of Shepherdsville, Courtland Middleton of Columbus, Ga., Freddie W. Middleton of Brandenburt, William A., Henry E., Danny R. and C. Norris Middleton, all of Louisville; four daughters, June Rose of Denver, Colo., Jerry Ewton of Jefferstown, Ind., Anita Hottendory of Everett, Wash., and Margaret Capps of Louisville; several grandchildren and great-grandchildren; brother, Alvey Middleton of Powderly.
Services will be held at 1 p.m. today (Wednesday) at Gary's Funeral Home with the Rev. Walter Evitts officiating. Burial will be in Rosehill Cemetery.

Eurie Middleton, 59, Is Buried Sunday
Greenville - Eurie Middleton, 59, Greenville, died at 4:45 p.m. Friday, March 10 at the Hopkins County Hospital in Madisonville after an illness of several months.
Mr. Middleton has been employed as a section hand by the Illinois Central Railroad for 16 years.
He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Ethel Middleton of Greenville; three daughters, Mrs. Adrain Arnett and Mrs. Billy Hardison of Greenville; Mrs. Cecil Weightman of Evanville [Evansville?]; four brothers, Att of Nebo, Herschel of Luzerne, Brank of Greenville and Alvey of Powderly; sister, Mrs. Bobby Jones of White Plains Route 1; six grandchildren.
Funeral services were at 2 p.m. Sunday with the Rev. H. Curtis Erwin officiating. Burial was in Forest Grove Cemetery.

Greenville - Mrs. Cora Miller, 92, of Greenville Route 3, died Sunday, March 5, at 10:25 a.m. in the Muhlenberg Community Hospital.
She was born Jan. 14, 1897 in Muhlenberg County and was a member of Cherry Grove Church of Christ.
Survivors include four sons, Lindel Wells of Evansville, Ind., Carl, James and Benjamin Wells of Greenville; daughter, Mrs. Esther Cook of Louisville; 15 grandchildren, three stepgrandchildren, 28 great-grandchildren and several great-great-grandchildren.
Services were held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Gary's Funeral Home with Robert Gardner officiating. Burial was in Cherry Grove Cemetery.

Evansville - Mrs. S.F. Miller, 59, of Evansville, Ind., died Friday, Jan. 11 at St. Mary's Hospital after a long illness.
She was the former Elizabeth Oldham of Graham.
Surviving besides her husband are three sons, Samuel and Steven of Evansville and Michael of Paris, Ky.; daughter, Miss Jean Ann Miller of Evansville; mother, Mrs. Jennie Oldham of Graham; three brothers, David Oldham of Graham, Gilbert Oldham of White Plains and Elwood Oldham of Nashville, Tenn.; two sisters, Mrs. Martha Jean Watkins of Paducah and Mrs. Shirley Ann Vincent of Evansville; two grandchildren.
Funeral services were at 10 a.m. Monday with Rev. Dale Jackson officiating. Burial was in Locust Hill Cemetery.

Isaac Randolph Miller, 85, died Wednesday, Jan. 9, at 4 p.m. at his home near Greenville.
Funeral services were conducted Friday at 2 p.m. at Carters Creek Church with the Rev. Raymond Forsythe officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery.
He is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Alvin Aders of Greenville, R2, and Mrs. Homer Ingle of Greenville, R3; two sons, Ivie Miller, Evansville, and Charles Miller, Greenville; three grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Robert Howard Miller, 75, of Central City, died at his residence on Reservoir Hill Thursday, March 20, at 8:45 a.m.
Born in Muhlenberg County April 17, 1893, he was a retired coal miner and a veteran of World War I.
He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Hazel Miller; son, Robert Paul Miller of Hammond, Ind.; daughter, Mrs. E.C. Gray of Central City Route 2; six grandchildren; sister, Mrs. Nora Warner of Central City.
Services were Saturday at 2 p.m. with the Rev. W.L. Blake of Beech Creek officiating, assisted by the Rev. Bobby Hambrick. Burial was in Muhlenberg County Memorial Gardens.

Elmer Mitchell, 71, died at St. Joseph's Infirmary in Louisville at 2:30 a.m., Sunday. He was born in Muhlenberg County in 1881 and was a member of the Central City Baptist Church.
Funeral services were held at 2:30 p.m., Tuesday in the Baptist Church with the Rev. O.P. Bush and the Rev. Francis Tallant officiating. Burial was in Fairmount Cemetery. Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Alpha Addington Mitchell, Central City; one son, Clyde R. Mitchell, Greenville; one granddaughter; five brothers, Walter Mitchell, Poole; James T. Mitchell, Chicago; R.W. Mitchell, Nashville; Ray Mitchell, Detroit; Herman Mitchell, Akron; two sisters, Mrs. Bertha Mathias, Orville, OH, and Mrs. Pearl Posey, Beach Creek.

Powderly - James Benjamin Mitchell, 94, of Powderly, died at 7:40 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 22 at the Muhlenberg Community Hospital.
He was born in Muhlenberg County Sept. 1, 1872.
Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Monday in Central City with the Rev. S.A. Kittinger officiating. Burial was in Rose Hill Cemetery.
He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Nannie Mitchell; eight daughters, Mrs. Dave Rhoades of Martwick, Mrs. Elna Whitaker and Mrs. Hazel Doom of Central City, Mrs. Una Drake, Mrs. Maybell Vincent and Mrs. Bonnie Lee of Powderly, Miss Josie Mitchell of Evansville and Mrs. Evelyn McEvain of Chicago; son, Henry Mitchell of Chicago; sister, Mrs. Delia Board of Powderly; brother, Bud Mitchell of Central City.

Mrs. Mary Mitchell Dies At Home Here
Had Been a Resident of Muhlenberg County for 50 Years; Survived by Four Children.
Mrs. Mary Mitchell, for the past 50 years a resident of Muhlenberg county, died at her home here in Central City of complications, on Sunday, at age of 74 years.
Born in Ireland, she came as a child to the United States, and when quite a young girl married the late Sam Mitchell, who for 50 years was a valued employee of the L. and N. railroad company, being located most of the time at his country home near Central City, up until the time of his death, eight years ago.
Mrs. Mitchell was an excellent woman, a good neighbor, the perfect mother of her nine children, and in her passing Central City suffer[s] a loss.
She is survived by her four children, Joseph and Robert, of Central City, John, of Memphis, Tenn., and Paul of Winconsin.
Funeral services were conducted from St. Joseph's Church of which she had been a life-long member, and were conducted by her pastor, Rev. Paul Durbin. Interment was in the South Carrollton cemetery where her husband and other five children were buried.

Powderly - Mrs. Nannie Mae Mitchell, 82, died at her home in Powderly Friday, Sept. 26, at 4:30 a.m.
Born in Muhlenberg County Nov. 27, 1886, she was a member of Powderly Baptist Church.
She is survived by five daughters, Miss Josie Mitchell, at home, Mrs. Evelyn McElwain of Chicago, Mrs. Maybelle Vincent, Mrs. Uva Drake and Mrs. Bonnie Lee of Powderly; three step-daughters, Mrs. Dove Rhoades of Martwick, Mrs. Elna Whittaker of Burkley, Mo. and Mrs. Hazel Doom of Central City; 13 grandchildren and 13 step-grandchildren, two sisters, Mrs. Ethel Doss and Mrs. Minnie Heltsley of Central City, Route 2; a brother, Claude Edwards of Central City; step-brother, Owen Crist of Central City.
Funeral services were at 2 p.m. Sunday in Central City with the Rev. S.A. Kittinger officiating, assisted by the Rev. Gene Harper. Burial was in Rose Hill cemetery.

Orville Mitchell Is Buried Oct. 5
Greenville - Orville Mitchell, Greenville Negro, died at the Madisonville Hospital, Oct. 1 night.
Funeral services were held at the First Baptist Church, Cherry Street, Oct. 5. The Rev. L.W. Jackson delivered the eulogy.
His survivors include his wife, Mrs. Omie Mitchell; four daughters, Mrs. Mary Reynolds, Greenville, Mrs. Margie Melton, Mrs. Katherine Taylor, Mrs. Naomi Render of Indianapolis; three sons, Johnnie of Buffalo, N.Y., and W.J. of Indianapolis, Ind., 15 grandchildren, three great-grandchildren; brother, Hayes Mitchell, Greenville; sister, Mrs. Lottie Hill, Detroit.
Burial was in the West End Cemetery.

Richard Mitchell Dies Early Sunday
Central City - Mr. Richard “Bud” Mitchell, 87, died Sunday, October 20, at 3:10 a.m. at the Muhlenberg Community Hospital in Greenville.
He was a retired miner, born in Muhlenberg County on July 25, 1887, and was a member of the Woodson Baptist Church.
Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Essie Mitchell, Central city; one daughter, Lucille Mitchell Nash, Deland, Fla.; one sister, Mrs. Della Board, Powderly.
Services were held Tuesday, October 22, at 2 p.m. at the Tucker Funeral Home in Central City with Rev. Bob Spears officiating, assisted by the Rev. Houston Noffsinger. Burial followed in Rose Hill Cemetery.
Note: Richard Mitchell died October 20, 1974.

Luther Moore, 76, Is Buried March 2
Graham - Luther Moore, 76-year-old retired Graham coal miner, died at 1 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 29 in the Muhlenberg Community Hospital after a short illness. He had worked 35 years for the W.G. Duncan Coal Co. and was born in December 1891 in Muhlenberg.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Saturday at Greenville with Robert Gardner officiating. Burial was in Corley's Chapel Cemetery.
He is survived by his widow, Mrs. Edith Moore; two step-daughters, Mrs. J.L. Parham and Mrs. Billy Johnston of Greenville Route 3; two step-sons, Buford Johnson of Greenville Route 3 and Loyd Johnson of Chicago; two sisters, Mrs. Ethel Adcock and Mrs. Tenny Stoltz of Madisonville; five brothers, Major, Paul and Johnnie of Madisonville; Morris of Delphi, Ind. and Bill of Newburg, Ind.

Mrs. Sallie M. Moorman Died at Home of Son
Mrs. Sallie M. Moorman, 90 years old, died at the home of her son, Edgar Nicholls in Broad street last Tuesday morning of infirmities of age, being in failing health for some time.
Mrs. Moorman was born in Ohio county, October 1, 1842. She was married to W.P. Bell of that county, to which union four children were born, all of whom preceded her in death. Later she married W.P. Nicholls, moving to Muhlenberg county, where she has lived more than 60 years. To this union were born three children, but one surviving, Edgar Nicholls, president of the Citizens Union Bank, this city.
Mrs. Nicholls later married J.C. Moorman, who also preceded her in death. Mrs. Moorman was widely known throughout the county, having a legion of friends.
Funeral services were held at 10:00 o'clock yesterday morning from the residence of her son, Edgar Nicholls, with the Rev. O.P. Bush, pastor of the Baptist church in charge. Burial was in the Walnut Creek Baptist church burying ground in Ohio county.

William Morgan, 27, Dies In Auto Mishap
Central City - Word has been received by Mrs. William D. Campbell of Central City of the death of her nephew, William A. Morgan, 27, of San Francisco, California, formerly of Greenville, who was killed in a three-car accident late Wednesday on the Golden Gate Bridge.
Morgan was the son of the late Mr. and Mrs. William K. Morgan of Greenville.
He is survived by his widow, Mrs. Linda Morgan of San Francisco; a brother, Edward Morgan of Beaufort, South Carolina; and a sister, Mrs. Vick Martin of Schula Vista, California.
Funeral services were in San Francisco.

Alfred Morris, 60, Dies in Morehead
Morehead - Funeral services were held Monday, Aug. 16, at Morehead for Alfred Morris, 60, miner, who died at his home here Saturday, Aug. 14. The Rev. Fred Fox officiated and burial was in the Coleman cemetery.
He was born in Muhlenberg County on Jan. 26, 1888 and had been a longtime member of the Woodson Baptist Church. He had been employed at the Pacific Coal Co. for a number of years.
He is survived by his widow, Mrs. Josephine Morris; two daughters, Mrs. Louise Cobb and Mrs. Pauline Vincent of Central City; one brother, Wood Morris of Central City and three grandchildren.

Eck Morris Dies of Heart Attack
Funeral Services Held Wednesday Afternoon at Morehead Church
Eck Morris, 47 years old, died unexpectedly about 12:30 o'clock Monday afternoon while at work on North Second Street. Death was attributed to an heart attack.
Mr. Morris lived on the Central City-Greenville Highway and was well-known here.
Funeral services were held at 2 o'clock Wednesday afternoon at Morehead church. Burial was in Coleman cemetery.

Samuel F. Morris
Samuel F. Morris, 57, dropped dead about 3:30 p.m. Tuesday. He was on the way from Rosewood to his home, in the Rosewood community. Funeral services were conducted at 1 p.m. Thursday at the church at Mercer, and burial was in the Coleman cemetery, in the Morehead community. His wife and several children survive.
