Charles W. Hamm

Hamm, Charles W., 81, of Louisville, passed away Tuesday, April 22, 2008, at the Episcopal Church Home. He was born in Muhlenberg County and was a retired employee of Cardinal Insulation. He was a Navy veteran of World War II and was a charter member of the Cruising Club of Louisville, being an avid sailor, a member of the Masonic Lodge of Jeffersonville and a Kentucky Colonel. He was preceded in death by an infant son, Charles W. Hamm Jr. Survivors include his wife, Shirley Zorn Hamm; his children, Rev. Dr. Mark A. Hamm (Dr. Marion), of Cleveland, OH, Stephanie L. Simpson (Dr. Roger), of North Platte, NE, Susan L. Higdon and Amy M. Clem (David), all of Louisville; brother-in-law, William P. Maddux (Judith); a sister-in-law, Jackie Durante; and 18 grandchildren. The funeral service will be held 11 a.m. Saturday at Ratterman and Sons, 3800 Bardstown Road, with entombment in Resthaven Memorial Park Mausoleum. The family will receive visitors at the funeral home from 2-8 p.m. Friday. Memorial gifts may be directed to the Alzheimers' Association or to the Kentucky Humane Society.

Countians' Brother Buried at Henderson
Robards - Morton Hammers, born Sept. 27, 1889 at Rochester in Bulter County, died April 18 of a heart attack at Robards. He was buried at Henderson Monday April 21.

He is survived by one brother, Harrison Hammers, of Evansville, two sisters, Mrs. A.L. Hendricks and Mrs. Katie McClellan, both of Cleaton.

Mrs. Fulkerson's Uncle, 80, Dies
Louisville - Thomas Hart, 80, died Sunday, Oct. 2 at 10:20 a.m. in Louisville. Funeral services were conducted Wednesday, Oct. 5 by the Rev. Robert H. Alston, pastor of the Hazelwood Baptist Church, with burial in Cave Hill cemetery.

Survivors include a daughter, Mrs. Rodman Bray; son, Bert Hart; brother, John Hart; three sisters, Mrs. Nora Shartzer, Mrs. Emma Langley, Mrs. Kate Clark; grandson, Robert Hart; niece, Mrs. Darrel Fulkerson of Central City.

George Harvey Dies in Louisville
Illinois Central Railroad Man Is Laid to Rest in Cemetery at Stanford, Ky.
George Harvey, 60 years old, died at his home in Louisville last Sunday afternoon at 3:20 o'clock, and was buried Tuesday afternoon in the cemetery at Stanford, Ky., following funeral services.

Mr. Harvey is survived by his widow, who was formerly Mrs. Kate Mitchell, and previously Miss Kate Bastin, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. J.W. Bastin of Central City. There is a surviving adopted son, Edwin Harvey, a son of Mrs. Kate Mitchell, and two step-children, John Bastin Mitchell and Lee G. Mitchell, both residents of Central City.

Deceased had been a conductor on the Illinois Central Railroad and was still active until his last illness.

All the family connections dwelling in this city went Monday to Louisville.

Mrs. Ethel Hearin
Central City-Mrs. Ethel Florence Hearin, 68, died at 10:45 p.m. Monday at her home in Evansville. Born in Stewart County, Tennessee, she was a member of Church of Nazarene, Evansville.

Survivors include two sons, Thomas Dillingham of Corpus Christi, Tex., and Wallace Dillingham of Springfield, Ohio; two sisters, Mrs. Mabel Dukes of Powderly and Mrs. Dolly Jackson of Pittsburgh, Pa.; three brothers, Charlie and William McCoy, both of Owensboro, and Clarence McCoy of Margo, Florida; seven grandchildren; three great-grandchildren.

Services will be conducted Wednesday at Tucker Funeral Home with the Rev. James Tripp officiating. Burial will be in Rose Hill Cemetery.

The body is at the funeral home where friends may call.

Theordora [sic] Heck Dies at Bevier
Theodora Heck, a life-long resident of Bevier, passed away at his home, July 19. Mr. Heck had been in failing health for a number of years. He is survived by his wife, two daughters, Mrs. T.L. Roll of this city; Mrs. E.L. Long of Cloverport; eight grand-children, one great grandchild, one brother, Joe D. Heck, of Huntsville.

Funeral services were conducted from the Anderson Funeral Home Monday evening at 5 o'clock by the Rev. Dewey Noffsinger, of Morton's Gap, assisted by Rev. Paul Logston of Richardsville. He was laid to rest in Rose Hill Memorial. The casket bearers were George and Carrol Baker of Hopkinsville, Evan and Johnnie Welborn of this city, E.J. Heck of Evansville, and Henry Heck of Martwick.

Heltsley, Claude

Two Men Killed At Powderly Mine
Claude Heltsley, 34, and George Maddox, 24, Victims of Slate Fall.
Two young men lost their lives at noon Tuesday when caught by falling slate in the mine of the Greenville Coal Company at Powderly. They were Claude Heltsley, 34 years old and George Maddox, 24 years old, both living at Powderly. They were engaged in repairing a trolley line not far from the main entrance, when falling slate crushed them, and it is thought, killed them instantly.

Their bodies were brought to Greenville to M.B. McDonald, funeral director, and prepared for burial. The double funeral service was held at the Baptist Church at Greenville at 3:20 o'clock Wednesday, the Rev. L.P. Whittaker, of Bremen, in charge. Interment followed in Evergreen cemetery.

The crowd of friends and relatives filled to overflowing the local church and the floral offering was very beautiful.

Heltsley is survived by his widow, his parents Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Heltsley, of Powderly, and one sister, Mrs. Lucien Keys, Central City. Twelve years ago a younger brother was accidentally drowned in the lake at Powderly.

Maddox is survived by his parents Mr. and Mrs. Edward Maddox, of Powderly, and four brothers and two sisters.

Powderly - Dallas Taylor Heltsley Sr., 66, died at 3:30 p.m. Saturday at his residence following a long illness.

He was a lifelong resident of Muhlenberg County, a retired farmer and a veteran of World War I.

Survivors include his widow, Mrs. Mae Heltsley of Route 2 Central City; two daughters, Mrs. Donald Potter of Greenville and Miss Joan Heltsley of Hopkinsville; son, D.T. Helstley Jr. of Greenville; five brothers, Herbert Heltsley of Nashville, Tenn., Shelby, William, and Eura Heltsley of Louisville, and Leonard Heltsley of Greenville.

Funeral services were held Monday in Greenville. The Rev. A.B. Gross was in charge of services. The Rev. Robert L. Doss assisted. Burial was in the Evergreen Cemetery at Greenville.

Estil Heltsley, 55, Dies in Pittsburgh
Fairmount, W. Va. - Estil Heltsley, 55, of Fairmount, W. Va., died at a hospital in Pittsburgh, Pa. Monday, July 29. He was a former resident of Drakesboro.

Survivors are a daughter and son; two brothers, Arthur Heltsley of Earlington, Ernest Heltsley of West Frankfort, Ill.; two sisters, Mrs. Randolph Kavanaugh of Corydon and Mrs. Dayton Underwood of Drakesboro.

Mathew W. Heltsley, 72, Dies at Rockport
Mathew Dillis Heltsley, 72, retired electrician at the Greenville Coal Co., died at his home in Rockport at 1 a.m., Wednesday, January 23.

Mr. Heltsley was born in Muhlenberg County but had lived in Rockport for the past 25 years. He was a member of the Rockport Baptist Church and Drakesboro Masonic Lodge.

Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Goldie Heltsley; four sons, John Heltsley, Owensboro; William Heltsley, Louisville; Hugh Heltsley and David Heltsley of Rockport; four daughters, Mrs. Herbert E. Wall, Mrs. Leo Jackson of Owensboro, Mrs. Carl H. Bunker of Louisville, and Mrs. George Miedrich of Kingston, PA; 18 grandchildren; two brothers, Henry Floyd Heltsley of Rantoul, IL, and Grover Heltsley of Penrod.

Funeral services were conducted at 2 p.m., Friday at the residence in Rockport with burial in Rose Hill Cemetery, Central City.

Heltsley, Samuel Alexander

S.A. Heltsley Dies Suddenly
Death claimed Samuel Alexander Heltsley, 60, 105 West Noel avenue, former councilman, grocery and meat market proprietor, at the Heltsley & Thomas grocery, North Main, at 5:50 o'clock Thursday morning, thirty minutes after he had been stricken with hemorrhage of the brain. He was conscious only ten minutes after the fatal attack. His co-partner, J.A. Thomas, heard Mr. Heltsley's cry for assistance when the latter was stricken in the rear of the store. He aided Mr. Heltsley to lie down near the stove where he expired. Mr. Heltsley had been in ill health for the past year, but had been at this store daily.

Samuel Alexander Heltsley, who was one of the city's most prominent business men, was born near Greenville, Muhlenberg county, April 13, 1865. He came to this city eighteen years ago, engaging in the meat business. Since then he had resided here.

He was a member of the city council for two years, retiring from office more than two years ago. He was a democrat in politics. The deceased had been a member of the Methodist church for years and was also affiliated with the Home of Friends.

Mr. Heltsley was married twice. His first wife was Miss Betty Newman, of Muhlenberg county. Of this union four children were born, three of them surviving, these being Mrs. Stella Farley, Murray, Ky.; Mrs. Ethel Montague, Owensboro, and Mrs. Drue Moore, Victoria. His first wife died twenty seven years ago.

His second wife was Miss Mary Newman, cousin of the first Mrs. Heltsley. She was also a native of Muhlenberg county. Ten children were born of this marriage, eight of whom, with the widow, survive. Mr. Heltsley married his second wife in 1900.

Rufus Heltsley, Newman Heltsley, who is connected with the mechanical department of The Messenger, Fred, David and Jimmy Heltsley, all of this city, are surviving sons, while Mrs. Caroline Thomas, Misses Nell and Frances Heltsley, all of Madisonville, are surviving daughters. Mr. Heltsley is also survived by one brother, Jake Heltsley, of Drakesboro, and two sisters, Mrs. Martha Langley and Mrs. Alice Jackson, also of Drakesboro.

Funeral services will be held at the family residence Friday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock, Rev. Leonidas Robinson officiating. Burial will be in Odd Fellows cemetery.

John R. Henry, 75, retired farmer and a lifelong resident of Muhlenberg County, died at 1:45 p.m., Saturday following a lingering illness.

Mr. Henry is survived by his wife, Mrs. Connie Henry; three sons, Howard Henry, Central City; Norman Henry, Willis, MI; Walter Henry, Adrian, MI; four daughters, Mrs. Ruth Kyle, Chicago; Mrs. Virginia Chamberlain, Romulus, MI; Mrs. Ida Tooley, Detroit; and Mrs. Mary Glaysbrook, Madisonville; 16 grandchildren; one great-grandchild; one sister, Mrs. Maud Cockran, Central City, Nebraska.

Funeral services were conducted Monday at 2 p.m. in the chapel of the Tucker Funeral Home with the Rev. S.A. Kittinger officiating. Burial was in Fairmount Cemetery.

Isaac L. (Ike) Hibbs, 76, of Central City, died at Muhlenberg Community Hospital Tuesday, March 25 at 2:50 a.m.

Born in Webster County April 1, 1898, he was a member of Green River Chapel General Baptist Church.

He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Anna Hibbs of Central City; two daughters, Mrs. John Bill McRoy of Central City and Mrs. Walter Williams of Greenville Route 3; son, William Hibbs of Central City Route 1; eight grandchildren and five great-grandchildren; sister, Mrs. Louise Redfern of Central City; half-brother, Euell Hibbs of Tell City, Ind.; half-sister, Mrs. Ida Belle Graham of Madisonville.

Services will be Thursday at 2 p.m. at Tucker Funeral Home in Central City with the Rev. William Bullock and the Rev. John H. Culbertson in charge. Burial will be in Memorial Gardens.

Central City - Mrs. Dollie Hickey, 99, of 215 Reynolds Street, Central City, died Tuesday, February 14, 1989 at 7:15 a.m. at the Muhlenberg Community Hospital.

Mrs. Hickey was born in Muhlenberg County on June 15, 1891. She was a member of the St. Joseph Catholic Church. Survivors include one brother, Charles B. Greenwood, Sr., of Central City; several nieces and nephews. Funeral services were held Thursday, February 16 at 11:00 a.m. at the Tucker Funeral Home in Central City with Father Tony Bickett officiating. Burial was in the Fairmount Cemetery.

Hightower, Clarissa Ann

Clarissa Ann Hightower, 47, of Central City died Monday, Dec. 9, 2002 at Regional Medical Center in Madisonville.

The Muhlenberg County native was a member of Ebenezer Baptist Church, former member of the young adult choir, assisted with Vacation Bible School activities, worked with the Culinary Dept. of the church and served on various other committees.

Survivors include three brothers, George Hightower of Pittsburgh, Pa., Joseph Anthony (Pete) Hightower Jr. of Owensboro and Everett (Ed) Hightower of Central City; six sisters, Alfreda Hightower of Orange, Calif., Martha Jean Hightower of Chicago, Ill., Darlene Thompson of Zion, Ill., Dorinda Harvey, Vera Hampton and Arlene Hightower, all of Central City; and two aunts, Dorothy H. Bibbs of Greenville and Lottie Parks of Indianapolis, Ind.

Visitation is from 6 - 8 p.m. Friday, Dec. 13, and from 12 - 1 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 14 at Ebenezer Baptist Church in Central City. The funeral service will be at 1 p.m. Saturday, also at the church. Burial will follow in West End Cemetery in Greenville. Bibbs Funeral Home in Greenville is in charge of arrangements.

Everett “Ed” Hightower, 43, of Central City, died Jan. 16, 2003, in a vehicle accident on the Western Kentucky Parkway. A native of Muhlenberg County, he was a member of Ebenezer Baptist Church and was employed by Benchmark Masonry of Bowling Green.

Mrs. Annie Hill, 78, Is Buried April 15
Mrs. Annie Hill, 78, died on Thursday, April 14, at 2:30 a.m. at her home on Greenville Route 3.

She was born in Muhlenberg County on Dec. 25, 1888, and was a member of Lone Star Baptist Church.

Surviving are one son, Aubrey Hill of Greenville Route 3; three grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; three sisters, Mrs. Mary Cary, Mrs. Pinkie Hammonds and Mrs. Lillie Wells, all of Greenville; two brothers, Walter Cook of Greenville Route 3 and Arthur Cook of Hammond, Ind.

Services were held Friday, April 15, at 3 p.m. at Lone Star Baptist Church, the Rev. William Bullock officiating, assisted by the Rev. Woodburn Green. Burial was in the church cemetery.

Mrs. Alice Hines, 84, died at 1:20 p.m. Wednesday, March 19, at Muhlenberg Community Hospital.

She was a member of Browder Chapel United Methodist Church.

Surviving are one brother, Johnny Reed of Greenville; four foster children, Mrs. Myrtle Walden of Cleveland, Ohio, Mrs. Franklin Dulin of Greenville, Charles William Fellows of Louisville and James Fellows of Flint, Mich.

Services were at 2 p.m. Saturday at Browder Chapel United Methodist Church, conducted by the Rev. W.C. Grace. Burial was in Browder Cemetery.

Hines, Ruth Ann

Drakesboro - Ruth Ann Hines, 70, of Drakesboro, died Tuesday, October 22, 2002 at her residence.

The Drakesboro native attended Drakesboro Community School and was a lifelong member of St. Paul A.M.E. Zion Church where she held the following leadership capacities: Missionary Society, Poor Steward Treasurer, Class Leader and District Officer. She was a devoted member of the Eastern Star. She retired with over 20 years of service from General Electric Aircraft Engine Company and prior to her retirement, she worked for the Tobacco Company in Greenville.

Survivors include six sons, William Hines and Harold Hines, both of Drakesboro; Stanley Hines of Central City, Stephen Hines of Madisonville, Perry Hines of Fort Wayne and Patrick Hines of Lawrenceburg; fifteen grandchildren; six great grandchildren and several aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins.

Funeral services were held Saturday, October 26 at Wesley Chapel, A.M.E. Zion Church. The Order of Eastern Stars performed last rites. Burial followed in West End Cemetery. Bibbs Funeral Home in Greenville was in charge of arrangements.

Stanley Ervin Hines, 44, of Central City, died Friday, Jan. 24, 2003, at Muhlenberg Community Hospital.

Born Nov. 13, 1958 in Muhlenberg County, he was a pipe fitter at TVA and a member of St. Paul A.M.E. Zion Church in Drakesboro. He was a veteran, having served in the U.S. Army.

He is survived by his wife, Janice Parker Hines; two sons, Christopher Hines and Nickolas Hines, both of Central City; five brothers, Patrick Hines of Lawrenceburg, Ky., Perry Hines of Indianapolis, Ind., Stephen Hines of Madisonville, William Hines and Harold Hines, both of Drakesboro; several nieces and nephews, aunts and cousins.

Funeral services were held Tuesday, Jan. 28, at Tucker Funeral Home with the Rev. Erskine Wade officiating. Burial followed in West End Cemetery in Greenville. Tucker Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

A.C. Hocker, 71 years old, died at his home at South Carrollton at 12:45 o'clock last Sunday morning of a complication of diseases. He is survived by his widow, Mrs. Fannie Hocker; four sons, William D. Funeral services were conducted at the Methodist church at South Carrollton at 2 o'clock Monday afternoon by the Rev. J.R. Marrs, pastor of the Woodlawn Methodist church, Owensboro, and the Rev. Ivan Allen, of Sacramento. Burial was at South Carrollton.

Jessie B. Hocker, 74, World War II vet, dies
Beechmont - Jessie Boyce Hocker, 74, of Beechmont Route 1, died Sunday, March 5 at 6:45 a.m. in the Muhlenberg Community Hospital.

A retired coal miner, he was born Oct. 24, 1914 in Butler County. He was a veteran of World War II and a member of the UMWA and the Browder Missionary Baptist Church.

Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Nova Hocker; son, John Paxton Hocker of Beechmont; daughter, Mrs. Rita Perry of Central City; stepson, William Rust Hocker of Drakesboro; two grandchildren and four step-grandchildren; sister, Mrs. Lois Stagner of Morgantown.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at the Tucker-Beechmont Funeral Home with the Rev. Ron Noffsinger officiating, assisted by the Rev. Norman Herald. Burial was in Forest Grove Cemetery.

Clyde Ruth Hogan, 7, Dies At Hopkinsville Hospital
Clyde Ruth, 7-year-old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Clyde Hogan, of Greenville, died at 11:30 o'clock Monday morning at the Virginia Stuart hospital, Hopkinsville, where she had been for treatment for some time. The child had been in ill health for five months. Besides the parents there survives one sister, Lois Evelyn. Funeral services were held from the Baptist church at 3 o'clock Tuesday afternoon with the pastor, the Rev. A.M. Parrish in charge. Burial was in Evergreen cemetery.

Sacramento - Mr. James William Howard, 58, of Sacramento, died Friday, September 15, 1995, at 3:25 p.m. at his residence in Sacramento.

Mr. Howard was born in Hardinsburg, Kentucky on October 1, 1936. He was a self-employed retired carpenter.

Survivors include his wife, Fern Cissna Howard of Sacramento; one step-son, Tony Coakley of Hanson; and two step-grandchildren.

Funeral services were held Sunday, September 17 at 2 p.m. at Tucker Memorial Chapel in Sacramento with Rev. John Smith officiating. Burial was in West School House Cemetery.

Livermore - Oscar Edward Hughes, 81, of Livermore, died Saturday, Feb. 11, at his home. He was a member of Island United Methodist Church, a veteran of World War I and a member of United Mine Workers of America.

Bernice Humphrey died at 7:10 a.m., May 14 at his home in Central City. Funeral services were conducted at the home at 1 p.m., May 15, by the Rev. P.A. McAfee. Burial was at Rochester cemetery, Rochester, KY.

Mr. Humphrey is survived by his mother, Mrs. M.E. Mrs. Mary Humphrey, 87, Dies in Cleaton
Mrs. Mary Elizabeth Humphrey, 87, died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Evan Welborn in Cleaton, at 1:10 a.m., Monday, February 2, after a long illness. She was a member of the Paradise Baptist Church. Born at Paradise, Novemer 16, 1865, she was a member of one of the pioneer families in that section.

Funeral services were conducted Tuesday at 1 p.m. at the Paradise Baptist Church by the Rev. Robert Bozarth, assisted by the Rev. Leonard Young, pastor of the Cleaton Baptist Church. Burial was in the Smith Cemetery.

Surviving are three daughters, Mrs. George O'Neal of Central City, Mrs. Welborn, and Mrs. Nell Thurman of Drakesboro, Route 1; son, W.S. Humphrey of Brownsville; five sisters, Mrs. Daisy Heck, Mrs. Sherman Tunstill, Mrs. Clarence Heltsley, Mrs. Delmar Cavanaugh, all of Paradise, Mrs. E.S. Prine of Chicago; two brothers, Leonard Smith and Carlos Smith, both of Drakesboro; 11 grandchildren, and 17 great-grandchildren. Grandsons and nephews were pallbearers.
Note: Mary E. Humphrey died February 2, 1953.

W.S. Humphrey, 86, Dies Jan. 25
Beaver Dam - William Smith Humphrey, 86, of Beaver Dam, died at 2:15 p.m., Monday, January 25 [1971] at his residence. Born June 18, 1885 in Muhlenberg County, he was a member of Paradise Baptist Church and Brownsville Masonic Lodge. Survivors include his widow, Mrs. Anna Lena Humphrey; two daughters; three sisters, Mrs. Nellie Thurman of Island, Mrs. Dee O'Neal and Mrs. Isodore Welborn of Central City; five grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Services were at 11 a.m., Wednesday in Beaver Dam with burial in Rochester Cemetery.
