Colored Doctor Commits Suicide
Dr. R.T. Bailey Takes Own Life Before Going On Trial in Circuit Court
Dr. Robert T. Bailey, colored physician of Central City, 52 years of age, committed suicide in Greenville Tuesday morning, where he was about to go on trial on a charge of illegal operation upon a white woman. It is understood he took the poison in a colored restaurant. He then walked to the court room where he collapsed in his seat. Greenville doctors pumped out his stomach and sent him on to his own sanitarium in Central City, where he died almost as soon as he arrived.

Dr. Bailey is survived by his widow. He had practiced medicine for many years in this city. Funeral services will be conducted at the Central City Baptist church tomorrow, (Friday), and interment will occur in the afternoon in the colored cemetery in Greenville.

John C. Baker, 91, Dies Jan. 6
Penrod - John Clifton Baker, 91, of Penrod Route 1, died at City-County Hospital in Bowling Green Sunday, Jan. 6.

A retired farmer, Mr. Baker was a son of the late Jacob and Jeanette Clark Baker and was born in Muhlenberg County Aug. 23, 1882. He was a member of Penrod Baptist Church.

Funeral services were Tuesday, Jan. 8 at 11 a.m. with the Rev. William L. Cook in charge. Burial was in Myers Chapel Cemetery.

Survivors include two sisters, Mrs. Lela Bradley of Nashville, Tenn. and Mrs. Winnie James of Penrod Route 1; several nieces and nephews.

Greenville - George Lester Bard, 61, of Greenville died Sunday, Oct. 8, 2001, at his home. The Depoy native retired from Air Gem Coal Mines in Carbondale, Ill. A son, Scottie Bard, died in 1979.

Survivors include his wife, Maxie Louise Bard; six sons, Marcus O'Shay of Central City, Jonathan Kane Bard of Virginia Beach, Va., Aaron Devon Bard and Ulysses Tyrone Bard, both of Greenville, Jeffery Bowling of Chicago and George Lamont Bard of Louisville; seven grandchildren; a brother, Wendell Bard of Lexington; and three sisters, Castella Hawkins and Celestine Bard, both of Greenville, and Ora Lee Parker of Madisonville. Services are at 3 p.m. Thursday at Bibbs Funeral Home in Greenville. Burial will be in West End Cemetery near Greenville. Visitation is after 2 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.

Drakesboro - Bennie Elizabeth “Sis” Bartlett, 97, of Drakesboro, died March 11, 2003, at Belle Meade Nursing Home in Greenville. Born in Butler County, she was of the General Baptist faith. She was preceded in death by her husband, Horace Bartlett in 1971.

She is survived by one daughter, Hilda Hope of Drakesboro; two grandchildren, Linda Shrull of Smiths Grove and Charlotte Williamson of Cadiz; six great-grandchildren; nine great-great-grandchildren; first daughter, Naomi Clark of Central City; ½ sister, Itiline Uzzle of Cadiz; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services were held Friday, March 14, at Tucker Funeral Home with the Rev. Danny Green officiating. Burial followed in Ebenezer Cemetery. Tucker Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Russellville - Mrs. Florella Rife Arnold Bass, 72, of Russellville died Tuesday, March 5, 2002 of natural causes at Logan Memorial Hospital in Russellville.

Mrs. Bass was born in Belton, Kentucky on September 20, 1929 to the late James Rife Sr. and Myrna Shultz Rife. She was a homemaker and a member of Arnolds Chapel A.M.E. (Bibbtown Community) and was an usher. Survivors include her husband, Marshall Bass of Russellville; one son, Jesse James Arnold Jr. of Russellville; five daughters, Edith Washington of Russellville, Theresa Gumm of Franklin, Debra Shelton of Hopkinsville, Jamie Parrish of Louisville and Celida Anderson of Baltimore, Maryland; two brothers, Forest J. Rife of Beaver Dam and Claude E. Rife of Drakesboro; three sisters, Pearline Mason of Drakesboro, Helen Chambers of Browder and Carolyn Reed of Drakesboro; 13 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were held Saturday, March 9, 2002 at Bethel Baptist Church in Drakesboro with Reverend Charles Johnson officiating. Burial followed in West End Cemetery in Greenville. Gamble Funeral Home in Hopkinsville was in charge of all arrangements.

Anna Marian Batsel Died Monday Morning
Anna Marian, four and one-half years old, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. J.C. Batsel, died at 9 o'clock Monday morning of complications, at the home of [her] parents. She has been sick for several weeks.

She is survived by her parents, two sisters: Mrs. Aubrey Gray, of Alburquerque, New Mexico; Mrs. R.L. Lindsey, of this city; three brothers, Clarance William, J.C. and Henry Louis Batsel. Funeral services were held at 2:30 p.m. Tuesday afternoon from the Baptist Church, the Rev. O.P. Bush in charge. Interment was at Fairmount cemetery alongside her grandfather, Dr. C. Woodburn, who met his death while attempting to stop his automobile on Broad Street, two years ago in which little Anna Marian was the only occupant.

Mrs. Eula Beard, 63, Is Buried Monday
Hardinsburg - Mrs. Eula Beard, 61, of Baltimore, Md., formerly of Greenville, died Thursday, April 14, in a Baltimore hospital after a long illness. She had worked for the Paradise TVA plant.

Surviving are a son, Marvin D. Beard of Baltimore; three grandchildren; two sisters, Mrs. Mary Hook and Mrs. Margaret Ames; three brothers, Thomas, Harold and Arthur Beard, all of Hardinsburg.

Funeral services were at 2 p.m. Sunday at Hardinsburg Baptist Church. Burial was in Ivy Hill Cemetery.

Mrs. W.H. Bell Dead.
Mrs. Margaret Bell, wife of Rev. W.H. Bell of this place [Central City], died last night at eleven o'clock at her home on Broad street, this city of abscess of the lungs, after an illness of over three months. She leaves a husband and four children to mourn her death. She was forty-eight years of age and had lived a consistent christian life. The remains will be interred in Fair Mount [Fairmount] Cemetery this city at 2 o'clock this afternoon. The bereaved family have the sincere sympathy of the entire community.

Mrs. Blanch E. Bennett, 87, of Central City, died in Sparks Rest Home in Central City Monday, Nov. 9 at 11:15 p.m.

Born in Muhlenberg County June 23, 1883, she was a member of the First Baptist Church.

She is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Rex Penrod of Detroit and Mrs. Mary Margaret Owens of Central City; three granchildren; three sisters, Mrs. Delia Stirsman and Mrs. Sallie Guynn of Central City and Mrs. Flora Settle of St. Petersburg, Fla.; brother, Jim Fentress of Indianapolis.

Services will be today (Thursday) at 2 p.m. in Central City with the Rev. W.R. Cook in charge. Burial will be in Rose Hill Cemetery.

Indianapolis, Ind. - Dorothy M. Johnson Bingham, 82, of Indianapolis, died Saturday, May 24, 2003 at the Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis.

The Marion County native was an active member of Mt. Pilgrim Baptist Church for many years. She is survived by one sister, Cordie Johnson of Greenville; one brother, Will Henry Johnson of Gary, Ind.; and many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Visitation, from 11 a.m. to noon, and funeral services at 12 noon, will be held Saturday, May 31 at Wesley Chapel A.M.E. Zion Church in Greenville. Henderson Berry (H.B.) Bishop, 83, died at the home of a daughter, Mrs. Corine Williams in Central City, Sunday, March 19 at 8:00 a.m. He was a retired dairy operator and a member of the First Baptist Church.

Funeral services were conducted Tuesday, March 21 at 2 p.m. with burial in Fairmount cemetery.

Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Ida Bishop of Central City; two sons, Dr. John Alden Bishop and Drake Bishop, both of Jeffersontown; two daughters, Mrs. Gordon L. Greene of Louisville, Mrs. Corine Williams of Central City, five grandchildren, four great-grandchildren.

Mrs. Ida Addington Bishop, 85, of Central City, died at Muhlenberg Community Hospital Saturday, March 22, at 3:30 p.m.

She was born in Ohio County Oct. 14, 1884, and was a member of First Baptist Church of Central City.

She is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Corinne Williams of Central City and Mrs. Gordon Green of Louisville; two sons, Dr. John Auldun Bishop and Drake Bishop, both of Jeffersontown; five grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren; sister, Mrs. Ross Morton of Central City.

Services were Tuesday, March 25, at 2 p.m. in Central City with the Rev. W.R. Cook officiating. Burial was in Fairmount Cemetery.

Leo Bivens, 65, Is Buried Today
Leo Bivens, 65, of Philpot Route 1, died early Monday, Jan. 14, at Owensboro-Daviess County Hospital.

Born May 27, 1908 in Muhlenberg County, he was a son of the late Frank and Lisa Richeson Bivens. He was a carpenter and a member of Calvary Temple Assembly of God.

Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Elsie Bivens; three sons, Bobby L. of Philpot Route 1, Billy Ray of Louisville and Harold Dean of Owensboro; daughter, Mrs. Virginia DeArmond of Owensboro; brother, Charles Bivens of Griffith, Ind.; three sisters, Mrs. Jimmie Hawkins of Mesa, Ariz., Mrs. Gertie Hawkins of Berwyn, Ill. and Mrs. Genevie Oller of Louisville; 12 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be at 2:30 p.m. today (Wednesday) at Calvary Temple Assembly of God with the Rev. Waymon Rogers, pastor of Evangel Tabernacle, and the Rev. Larry Orr, pastor of Calvary Temple Assembly of God, officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Gardens.

Mrs. Leach's Brother, 85, Dies in Hartford
Hartford - Thomas H. Black, 85, a retired farmer, died Thursday, March 13 in the Ohio County Hospital. He had suffered from a heart ailment.

Mr. Black was a former sheriff and jailer of Ohio County and served as county drainage commissioner.

Surviving are a daughter, Miss Lola Geneva Black, and a sister, Mrs. O.L. Leach, Central City. The funeral was at 2 p.m. Saturday at Hartford Methodist Church.

Blackburn, John Washington

J.W. Blackburn Dies At Home Here Tuesday Night
Funeral Services Held from Home; Interment in Fairmount Cemetery.
John Washington Blackburn, a long time resident of Central City, died at his home here Tuesday night after several weeks illness of complications.

Mr. Blackburn was one of the older business men of the city, having come here thirty years ago to engage in the transfer business, first using horse-drawn vehicles, and later, as the auto became popular, discarded the horses in favor of the machines, and retired from business only when his health failed.

He married, when quite a young man, Miss Cora Parrott, of McHenry, and to this union four children were born. One little girl died when quite small, and the remaining three, Mrs. William Threadgill, of Dawson Springs, and George Blackburn and Harry Blackburn, of Central City, together with the widow, also of Central City, survive him.

Mr. Blackburn was born in Springfield, Ill., 67 years ago, but came as a child with his widowed mother to McHenry where he lived until he located in Central City.

Funeral services were conducted from the home at 2:30 o'clock Thursday afternoon, the Rev. O.P Bush, pastor of the Baptist Church of which Mr. Blackburn was a member, officiating. Funeral services were conducted at the grave by the Central City Lodge of Masons, of which Mr. Blackburn had been a member since taking up his residence in Central City.

The pallbearers were Mayor-elect Freeman Hershberg, Judge H.E. Coche, Mike Poulos, Roy M. Wright, Ashton Wright and W.M. Wells. Interment was in Fairmount Cemetery by the side of his little girl buried 28 years ago.

DIED. In this city, on Saturday the 13th inst., Mrs. E.A. Blackwell. The deceased was the mother of Mrs. A.A. and Mrs. J.C. Johnston of this city. The remains were taken to Augusta for interment on Sunday, a large number of people following them to their last resting place.
Note: This is Eliza Ann Newman, born 7 December 1825 in Greenville, Muhlenberg Co., Kentucky, daughter of Thomas Charles Newman 1800-1864 and his wife Malinda Carolina Welborn 1801-1873. Her first husband was Arthur N. Davis, who died in Muhlenberg County on 9 March 1868; her second was William Marshall Blackwell, who died after her.

Powderly - Mrs. Delie Board, 94, of Powderly, died Sunday, October 8 at 1:50 p.m. at the Muhlenberg Community Hospital in Greenville.

Mrs. Board was born in Muhlenberg County October 1, 1884.

Survivors include two daughters, Mable Hinton, Powderly, Bessie Oglesby, White Plains; two sons, Hugh Board, Akron, Ohio; Denzil Board, Nigley, Ohio; nine grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were held Tuesday, October 10 at 2 p.m. at the Tucker Funeral Home in Central City with Rev. Houston Noffsinger officiating, assisted by the Rev. Bob Spears. Burial was in Coleman Cemetery.

J.B. Board, 70, Dies Near Morgan
Morgan - J.B. Board, 70, retired miner, died at his home in the Morgan community at 9 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 26. He was a member of the Old Bethel Baptist Church.

The funeral service was conducted Monday at 2:30 p.m. at the Morehead Baptist Church by the Rev. J.B. Matheney, assisted by the Rev. Victor Phelps. Burial was in the Coleman Cemetery.

Survivors are the wife, Mrs. Dee Mitchell Board; three sons, Clarence Board, Chicago; Hoyt and Denzil Board, Akron, Ohio; two daughters, Mrs. Bessie Oglesby, White Plains; Mrs. Mabel Hinton, Powderly; eight grandchildren.

Miss Rethal Board, 26 years old, died of tuberculosis at her home near old Bethel church at noon Monday.

A funeral service, conducted by Gus Stovall, of Greenville, was held at Woodson Baptist church at 4 o'clock on Tuesday afternoon, and interment was in the Coleman burying ground. The father, three brothers, and two sisters survive.

Bohannon, Joseph Haden

Joseph Haden Bohannon, 52 years old, was found dead in bed at his home on Hopkinsville street here Tuesday morning. Funeral services, conducted by the Rev. Arthur B. Gross, pastor of the First Presbyterian church, this city, were held at the home at 2 o'clock Wednesday afternoon, and burial was in Evergreen cemetery here.

Mr. Bohannon was a son of Dr. J.G. Bohannon, prominent Louisville physician, who died several years ago. He is survived by two brothers, Dr. George Bohannon, of Louisville, and Hugh Bohannon, of Jasper, Ala.; three sisters, Mrs. Gracie Pulley, Mrs. Ruth Sherrod, and Mrs. Virginia Hale, all of Greenville.

Ceaphus Booth, 87, of Central City, died at Jenny Stuart Hospital in Hopkinsville Tuesday, Nov. 5, at 11 a.m.

A retired farmer, he was born in Butler County Oct. 25, 1887.

He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Cora Booth of Central City; son, J.C. Booth of Elizabethtown; three daughters, Mrs. Pearl Stewart of Central City, Mrs. Myrl Ingram of Lockport, N.Y. and Mrs. Dean Back of Rineyville; 19 grandchildren, 33 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren; brother, Eldon Booth of Rineyville.

Funeral services will be Friday at 2 p.m. at Tucker Funeral Home in Central City with the Rev. Roy Geary and the Rev. Leroy Vaught in charge. Burial will be in Smith Cemetery in Butler County.

Joshua Curtis Boyd, 22, of Central City, died May 2, 2003, at Lime Lake in Central City.

Born June 26, 1980 in Muhlenberg County he was a member of Calvary Baptist Church and was employed at McDonald's Restaurant in Greenville.

He is survived by his father, Clifford Boyd of Central City; his mother, Judy Vick of Cleaton; two brothers, Clifford Vick of Fredonia and Jason Boyd of Central City; four sisters, Brittany Houle of Central City, Tiffany Boyd of Cleaton, Sabrina Boyd and Amber Boyd, both of Belton; grandmother, Emma Boyd of Cleaton; and several nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, May 6, at Tucker Funeral Home in Central City. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, May 7, also at Tucker Funeral Home, with the Rev. Mark Heady officiating. Burial will follow in West End Cemetery in Greenville.

Penrod Man Found Dead in a Chair
A funeral service was held Thursday for William W. Bradley, 77-year-old resident of Penrod, who was found dead at his home Wednesday morning by a family occupying several rooms in the residence.

Mr. Bradley was found dead in a chair, and a coroner's verdict was heart failure. Surviving is a daughter, Mrs. J. Smith of near Penrod.

Charles Bransford, 72, of Central City Route 2, died in Muhlenberg Community Hospital Tuesday, March 19, at 6:15 p.m.

A retired miner, he was born in Muhlenberg County July 12, 1895, and was a member of Calvary Baptist Church.

Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Callie Bransford; daughter, Mrs. Melladean Krifft of St. Paul, Minn.; stepson, J.W. Culbertson of Central City Route 1; five grandchildren, two step-grandchildren and one step-great-grandchild; two brothers, Willis Bransford of Central City Route 1 and William Bransford of Michigan; two sisters, Mrs. Flora Roach of Central City Route 1 and Mrs. Clara Gentry of Ohio.

Services will be today (Thursday) at 3 p.m. in Central City with the Rev. Floyd Berry, pastor of Calvary Baptist Church officiating. Burial will be in Fairmount Cemetery.

Rev. Charlie Brown, 101, minister for 50 years, dies
The Rev. Charlie Brown, 101, of Central City Route 2, died Friday, Feb. 10 at 3:25 p.m. in the Belle Meade Nursing Home.

He was born July 21, 1887 in Muhlenberg County and was a retired miner. He was an ordained minister for 50 years and was the oldest member of Cherry Hill Baptist Church.

Survivors include his son, Earl Brown of South Carrollton; stepson, Kenneth Conway of Bremen; three daughters, Bernadine Steele and Charlie Avaline Wiggins of Central City, and Marjorie McDonald of Greenville; 13 grandchildren, two step-grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren, four step-great-grandchildren and five great-great-grandchildren.

Services were held at 2 p.m. Sunday at Tucker Funeral Home with the Rev. Glenn Cope officiating, assisted by the Rev. Everett Wilkins. Burial was in Cherry Hill Baptist Church Cemetery.

Mrs. Elizabeth Brown, 65, of Jasonville, Ind., died Thursday at her home, according to a sister, Helen Swan of Owensboro. She was born in Central City.

Blackie Brown Taken By Death
Well Known Citizen and Veteran of War Between the States Died Sunday.
The ranks of the surviving members of Muhlenberg veterans of the War Between the States were reduced Sunday when death claimed “Uncle” Blackie Brown, 92, a Union Soldier in the conflict between the States.

Mr. Brown died at the home of a son, Pete Brown, a resident of the Cherry Hill section of the county. For many years he resided in Central City and was a life-long resident of the county, being born near Cedar Grove.

He was a member of the Cedar Grove Baptist church, uniting many years ago, and was at one time Coroner of Muhlenberg county.

Services were held Monday afternoon at the Cedar Grove Baptist Church by the Rev. Mr. Kittinger of Bremen and interment was in the church cemetery.

Surviving are five sons and one daughter: Mannie Brown, Bremen; Jim Brown, Earles; Dan Brown of Old Bethel community; Vasco Brown, a resident of Eastern Kentucky, and Pete Brown, R. 3, Central City; and Mrs. Jess Richie.

Brown, James S. Jr.

James S. Brown Jr., age 71, of Carlisle passed away on Monday, February 7, 2005 at WPAFB Hospital. He was born on April 26, 1933, in [Muhlenburg County], Kentucky, the son of James S. and Retha (Murphy) Brown, Sr. He served in the U.S. Air Force for 21 years and after retirement worked as a car salesman. Mr. Brown was a member of the V.F.W.

He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Mona; two sons, Lester C. (Christina) Brown and Edward A. Brown all of Carlisle; two daughters, Teresa (Jack) Senft of Franklin and Sherrine (Lonnie) Dunning of Middletown; former daughter-in-law, Berta Brown of Allen, Texas; brother, Billy E. Brown of Kansas; and a sister, Jvonnia O'Hair of Kentucky. He also leaves 10 grandchildren and 8 great grandchildren.

Funeral services will be at 10:00 a.m. on Friday at the Anderson Funeral Home, 1357 E. Second Street, Franklin with Reverend Dave Bowling officiating. Burial with full military honors will be in Springboro Cemetery. Visitation will be on Thursday from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. on Thursday at the funeral home.

Jesse William Brown Dies At Cleaton
Jesse William Brown, 63, died at his home at Cleaton Saturday, December 29, at 4 p.m.

The body remained at the Tucker Funeral Home until the funeral, due to the illness of his wife and baby of five days of age.

He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Nellie Gray Brown; and six children.

Funeral services were held Sunday, at 2 p.m., at the residence, conducted by Mr. Bingham, pastor of the Cleaton Baptist church.

Burial was in Miller Cemetery.

John Brown, 87
John Brown, 87, of Greenville Route 2, died at 9:30 p.m. Monday, Dec. 8 in the Muhlenberg Community Hospital.

A retired coal miner, he was born Dec. 31, 1892 in Muhlenberg.

He is survived by three sons, Oswald of Bradenson, Fla., Lindell of Powderly and Rollie Brown of Bremen; four daughters, Mrs. Mary Gootee of Central City, Mrs. Dixie Crick and Mrs. Jannie Steele of Powderly and Mrs. Inez Dugger of Portage, Ind.; 15 grandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at the Gary Funeral Home with the Rev. John T. Rice officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Gardens in Powderly.

Mrs. Minnie Brown
Mrs. Minnie Brown, 52, died December 30 at the home of her son, Harry Brown, of near Powderly. The funeral service was conducted by Rev. Drexel Hankins at Oak Grove church, Depoy, at 2 p.m. Thursday. Burial was in the church cemetery.

She is survived by five sons, Gilbert, Kirby Lee and Thelma Brown, all of Depoy; Noble and Harry E. Brown, both in the armed forces; two brothers, Denzel and Melvin Turner, both of Depoy, and five grandchildren.

Mrs. Nellie Brown, 42, Dies in Cleaton
Cleaton - Mrs. Nellie Gray Brown, 42, died at her home in Cleaton, Sunday, July 28 at 1:25 p.m. She was born in Muhlenberg County Oct. 4, 1914 and was a member of the Cleaton Baptist Church. Funeral services were conducted Tuesday, July 30 at 2 p.m. at the Maple Grove Baptist Church in South Carrollton with the Rev. Joe Davis officiating. Burial was in the Fairmount Cemetery.

She is survived by three sons, Bobby, Otha Ray, and William Lucky Brown, all of Cleaton; three daughters, Mrs. Carolyn Nicholls and Mrs. Shirley Kilmon of Henderson, Mrs. Alda Howell of Cleaton; parents, Mr. and Mrs. J.R. Vincent of Cleaton; three brothers, Eugene Vincent of Cleaton, Elmer Vincent of Russellville, Lucky Vincent of Beechmont; six sisters, Mrs. Violet Ingram of White Plains, Mrs. Lorene Romans of Morgantown, Mrs. Cora Nunley of Cleaton, Mrs. Irene Hughes of Chatsworth, Ill., Mrs. Sarah Ann Whitmer and Mrs. Sue Mohon of Central City Route 4.

Pallbearers were nephews.

Browning, Jerry Glenn

Russellville - Mr. Jerry Glenn Browning, 57, of Russellville, died Friday, September 15, 1995 at Baptist Hospital in Nashville, Tennessee.

Mr. Browning was born Muhlenberg County in June 14, 1938. He was employed at River Queen Coal Mines as a miner, member of New Cypress Baptist Church, and a member of Masonic Lodge #673 in Central City, Civil Defense. He was preceded in death by father, Arthur Browning and mother, Opal Mae Browning.

Survivors include his wife, Minnie Browning of Russellville; one daughter, Cheryl Allen of Russellville; two sons, David Browning of Clare, Michigan and Terry Browning of Clare, Michigan; one brother, Buddy Browning of Cedarlake, Illinois; and one sister, Ruth Ross of Braidwood, Illinois.

Funeral services were held Sunday, September 17 at 2 p.m. at Price Funeral Home, Inc. in Lewisburg with Rev. Harold Harvey officiating. Burial was in New Cypress Cemetery in Muhlenberg County.

Drakesboro - Ms. Madie Lee Buchanan, 82, of Drakesboro, died Sunday, September 17, 1995 at 12:25 a.m. at Muhlenberg Community Hospital in Greenville.

Ms. Buchanan was born in Muhlenberg County on June 28, 1913. She was a member of First Baptist Church in Drakesboro.

Survivors include two sons, Darrel Ray Buchanan of Camden, Tennessee and Rondal Lee Buchanan of Drakesboro; four daughters, Wanda Rives of Louisville, Maryann McDonald of Greenville, Dolores Burden of Evansville, Indiana and Fay Price of Auburn; 14 grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren; one brother, Charles William Maxwell of Lexington, and three sisters, Beulah Negley of Louisville, Mary Elizabeth Wood of Louisville and Carrie Ray of Drakesboro.

Funeral services were held Tuesday, September 19 at 2 p.m. at Tucker Funeral Home in Central City with Lowell Abney officiating. Burial was in Rose Hill Cemetery.

Buchanan, Virgil

Virgil Buchanan, 76, of Louisville, died at 4 a.m. Monday, Feb. 13, in Louisville. He was a native of Beech Creek and a carman at the Louisville & Nashville Railroad Co. for 35 years until retiring in 1965.

Survivors include three daughters, Mrs. Gladys Fahringer, Mrs. Sue Fitzpatrick and Mrs. Dorothy Smith of Louisville; seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren; two brothers, Horace Buchanan of Greenville and Homer of Morgantown.

Services will be at 11 a.m. today (Wednesday) in Louisville with burial in Schardein Cemetery.

His brother, Pearly Buchanan, 87, of Drakesboro Route 1, died Jan. 17.

Mrs. Mary Louise Bumgardner, 58, of Central City, died Thursday, Jan. 10 at Hopkins County Hospital.

Born Oct. 5, 1915 in Muhlenberg County, she was a member of Cleaton Baptist Church.

Surviving are her husband, Noah Bumgardner; two sons, Bobby Miller of Browder; mother, Mrs. Martha Ella West of Central City; two brothers, Malcolm West of Berwyn, Ill. and James Kenneth West of Central City; sister, Mrs. Hilda Sharp of Central City; eight grandchildren.

Funeral services were at 2 p.m. Saturday at Tucker Funeral Home, Central City, with the Rev.. Roy Geary, pastor of Cherry Hill Baptist Church, and the Rev. R.D. Mize, pastor of Cleaton Baptist Church, officiating. Burial was in Rose Hill Cemetery.
