Robertson, Alney McLean & Eudoxie Smith

Husband: Alney McLean Robertson
Born: ca. 1813
Died: After 1880 probably in Christian Co., KY
Father: David Robertson
Mother: Rachael S. Dennis

Wife: Eudoxie Smith
Born: 12 November 1815, Paradise, Muhlenberg
Married: 10 September 1837, Muhlenberg
Died: 27 September 1839, age 24 years
Buried: McDougal Cemetery with parents
Father: Aaron Fairfax Smith
Mother: Judith Stum

Alney remarried after Eudoxia's death, 08 June 1842, Fanny Tooley d/o John and Elizabeth Tooley. In the 1850 Muhlenberg County census, Fanny Robertson lived with her parents. It is said that he went to CA during the Gold Rush years. Fannie Robertson remarried, 07 November 1859, becoming the second w/o Greenbery Roll. She died 08 September 1876.

Next mention of Alney was in old circuit court documents for October 1872 when Leonard Smith (brother to Eudoxie) was appointed by the court as the committee to care for “Leurana” Robertson. The “jury affirmed Leurana…of unsound mind…about 35 years old…estate of about 700 acres of land…resided with her uncle and that her father is now confined in the…asylum at Hopkinsville, KY…her mother is dead and her father has no estate of his own.” Leonard was to care for her at $50 per annum. (Circuit Court, October 1872, Box 49, Case 428)

In the 1880 Christian County, KY census, Alney M. Robertson, age 67, farmer, widowed, was listed in the asylum, what is now the Western Kentucky State Hospital.

Children of Alney M. Robertson and Eudoxie Smith:

  1. Laura or Leurana Robertson, born 05 June 1838, was retarded. Her date of death has not been found. Last censused 1880.

In the guardian settlements in 1877, Leonard Smith, committee for Leura Robinson, included the following items (Guardian book 5, p. 332, 09 June 1877):

Boarding and clothing 1862-1873 at $50 per year and 1874-1876 at $75 per year. She appeared in the 1880 Muhlenberg County census living in the home of Presley Smith, another uncle. Leonard Smith, her guardian had died in 1879. This is the last record I can find for Laura Robertson.

  2. Aaron Smith Robertson, born 22 September 1839.

Aaron S. Robinson (also listed as Robertson) died 11 March 1862 in Nashville, TN of typhoid. He was Corporal I Company, 25 years old, 08 October 1861 at Camp Caloway, Hartford, KY. Source: US National Archives.

Aaron does not appear in the census after 1850 when he and Laura lived with their grandfather Aaron. Guardian Settlements list the settlement made 11 April 1874 by “Presley Smith, administrator de bonis non, A.S. Robertson deceased, in account with said estate“ (Muhlenberg County KY Administrators and Guardians Settlements, Book 5, p. 17).
