1799 Tax List
The 1799 Tax List is a list of all white men over the age of 21 living in Muhlenberg County with or without property. The list I'm working from is obviously a copy: The names have been placed in loose alphabetical order.
The last page of the photocopy that I've worked from makes reference to a second book for the 1799 Tax List. This Book lists at most 84 more names of White, Male Citizens who were taxed for property in Muhlenberg. It is unclear whether I simply did not receive this second book or whether it no longer exists. Click here for the Totals Page for Books 1 & 2 of the 1799 Tax List.
The tax list covers the following information:
- “Date of receiving(?) the lists”
- Persons named chargeable with Tax
- Acres of land, and what quality
- Name of "Waters" on which land is located
- County in which the land is located
- “Persons named in which the land was [illegible]”
- “Persons named for whom the land was Surveyed”
- “Persons named for whom the [land] Grant [was] issued”
- Number of white men over 21
- Number of white men “of 16”
- Number of blacks “of 16”
- Total number of blacks
- Number of horses
- Number of stud horses
- “The rate of covering”
- “Those come since 10th of March [illegible]”
For this transcription of the tax list, all land is located in Muhlenberg unless otherwise noted in the Notes section. All land was 2nd rate unless otherwise noted. I did not transcribe “The Rate of Covering” section. The “Ditto” marks may actually refer to the person listed at the beginning of the line rather than to the line above; though there are instances in which the marks do indeed refer to the line above. It's very confusing.
