Directions and Description

From Greenville take Highway 62W to Highway 189. Turn left on Highway 189 and go 5.1 miles to Highway 1473. Turn left on Highway 1473 and go 0.4 miles. The cemetery is on right just around a curve and past the old farm house.

Within the cemetery, there is one concrete or sand stone coffin-shaped tomb, without a name or dates. It is about 43½" long and 25" across at its widest, and looks to be the tomb of of a child. There are also a few unreadable stones and several sand stone markers that have been painted white.

Surnames found in this cemetery are Boggess, Faughender, Phillips, Putman, and Rice.

    Robert was the son of Robert (or Richard?) Boggess and Rosannah Reynolds. Rosannah was born 1792 in Virginia and is buried at the old Reynolds Cemetery. Robert married 13 September 1859 to Nancy J. Rice. He was 36 and she was 20 when they married. He married (2) Mary “Mollie” who may have been a Cunningham.

    Mary “Mollie” died 14 November 1915. She was the second wife of Robert Boggess. Robert E. Boggess was the informant on her death certificate. He did not know who her parents were.

    Nancy J. “Nannie” was born 19 July 1840 and died 05 January 1871. She was the daughter of Thomas Jefferson Rice and Mary Susan Weir. She married 13 September 1859 to Robert Boggess.


  2. Faughender
    This is a large stone monument with the name “Faughender” and four smaller stones surrounded by a concrete border near front right side of the cemetery.

  3. Ann R. Faughender
    29 January 1848 - 25 January 1928

    Ann Lurena Rice was the daughter of Moses Milton Rice and Sarah Amandaville Drake. She married (1) Samuel W. Earl; married (2) 20 December 1866 in Muhlenberg Co., KY to William Gray Faughender (Souce: Muhlenberg Marriage Book 6, page 157).

    “Mrs. Ann Lurena Faughender, age 80 years, died from a prolonged attack of Asthma and complicated troubles. She was a native of the county, and one of the best beloved characters throughout the section in which she spent her long useful life. A woman of strong intellect and pleasing personality, she was a recognized leader, and her influences will never die. Burial was made in the Rice Graveyard Friday afternoon, the body being laid beside that of her husband, who died three and a half years ago. There was a large gathering of relatives and friends. Surviving are the following children: Professor Milton R. Faughender, Messrs Ezekiel, William and James Faughender, all of whom reside on the old home place.”

    Benjamin R. was the son of William Gray Faughender and Ann Lurena Rice.

    Milton M. was the son of William Gray Faughender and Ann Lurena Rice. He never married and was a school teacher.

  6. W.G. Faughender
    20 April 1839 - 02 October 1924

    William Gray Faughender was the son of George Lee Faughender of Pittsburg, Pennsylvania, and Nancy Carter Myers of Christian Co., KY. He married 20 December 1866 to Ann Lurena Rice in Muhlenberg Co., KY (Souce: Muhlenberg Marriage Book 6, page 157).

    John Oliver was born 21 March 1850 in Tennessee; died 13 January 1926 in Muhlenberg Co., KY. He was the son of Samuel O. Phillips born Virginia and Mary Tabor of Tennessee. He married (1) Rebecca Jane; married (2) in 1879 to Rebecca Ann Pendley; married (3) 01 December 1909 to V. Williams.

    Rebecca Ann Pendley was born March 1855 in Todd Co., KY, and died 02 April 1904 in Muhlenberg Co., KY. She married 1879 to John Oliver Phillips. She died of consumption [tuberculosis] at her home near Bancroft.

  8. Thomas D., son of J.M. and L.A. Putman

    Thomas D. was the infant son of Jessie Miles Putman and Lucy Ann Rice.

  9. Albert Marvin Rice
    September 1870 - 29 October 1875

    Albert Marvin was the son of Samuel E. Rice and Mary Susan Grigsby. Samuel and Mary are buried at Evergreen Cemetery in Greenville.

  10. B.M. Rice
    23 April 1861 - 29 May 1953

    Benjamin M. was the son of Moses Milton Rice and Sarah Amandaville Drake. He married 20 September 1906 to Pearl F. Stout, age 26, from Kuttawa, KY. Pearl was the daugther of William Stout and Anna Elbert. Benjamin was 45 years old when he married, and was a prison guard at Eddyville State Penitentiary.

  11. Bonny H., daughter of S.E. and M.S. Rice
    12 October 1882 - 22 February 1883

    Bonny H. Rice was the daughter of Samuel E. Rice and Mary Susan Grigsby. Samuel and Mary Rice are buried at Evergreen Cemetery in Greenville.

  12. Ezekiel Rice
    1774 - 24 August 1847

    Ezekiel was the son of William Rice born 1742, Prince Edward Co., VA, and died 16 March 1824 in Muhlenberg Co., KY. Ezekiel's mother was Frances Grainger Crenshaw. Ezekiel married 17 September 1798 in Washington Co., KY to Nancy Ann Watkins.

    Frances was the daughter of Moses Milton Rice and Sarah Amandsaville Drake.

  14. Geneva B. Rice
    27 November 1885 - 29 October 1969

    Geneva was the daughter of William H. and Mary J. Bard. She married 1911 to James J. Rice.

    Infant daughter of John Milton Rice and Mary Ann Butler.

  16. Infant daughter of S.E. and M.S. Rice

    Infant daughter of Samuel E. Rice and Mary Susan Grigsby. They are buried at the Evergreen Cemetery in Greenville.

    James J. Rice was the son of Moses Milton Rice and Sarah Amandaville Drake. He married 08 February 1911 in Muhlenberg Co., KY, to Geneva Bard (Source: Muhlenberg Marriage Book 32 page 409).

    John Milton Rice was the son of Moses Milton Rice and Sarah Amandaville Drake. He married October 1866 in Todd Co., KY to Mary Ann Butler. John Milton Rice was a farmer. He sold goods for himself in Kirksmanville, KY for two years. He farmed in Texas 1879 and 1880 where he went for his health. After regaining his health he returned to Muhlenberg County, farming and running his mill. He and his wife were members of the Methodist Episcopal Church South.

    This stone is a four sided obelisk with John Milton's and Mary Ann's information on opposite sides.

    This stone is a four-sided obelisk with the couples' dates on opposite sides.

    James H. Rice was the son of John E. Rice and Jane Martin. He married 04 November 1857 to Elizabeth Mary Rice.

    Elizabeth Mary Rice was the daughter of Thomas Jefferson Rice and Susan Mary Weir.

    James W. was the son of Ezekiel Rice and Nancy Ann Watkins. He married 17 November 1831 to Susan M. Martin.

  21. Mary E. Rice
    28 January 1844 - 22 November 1863

    Mary E. Rice was the daughter of James W. Rice and Susan Martin. This stone has been broken and reset with dates missing.

  22. Moses M. Rice
    08 March 1817 - 23 July 1894

    Moses Milton Rice was the 10th child of Ezekiel Rice and Nancy Ann Watkins. He married (1) 14 November 1844 to Sarah Amandaville Drake. He married (2) 13 April 1876 to Ruth Ann Drake, sister to Sarah Amandaville.

    Nancy Ann was the daughter of James Watkins. She married 17 September 1798 in Washington Co., KY to Ezekiel Rice.

  24. Ruthy A., wife of Moses M. Rice

    Ruth Ann Drake was the daughter of Mosley Collins Drake and Lurana S. Wells. She married 18 April 1876 to Moses Milton Rice. It was her first marriage and Moses's second. They were both 60 years old.

    Sarah Amandaville Drake was the daughter of Mosley Collins Drake and Lurana S. Wells. She married 14 November 1844 to Moses Milton Rice.

    Susan was the daughter of Hutson Martin and Anna Lockridge, both buried at Old Liberty Cemetery. She married 14 February 1838 to James W. Rice.

    Susan was the infant daughter of Thomas Jefferson Rice and Susan M. Weir.

  28. Susan M., wife of T.J. Rice

    Susan was the daughter of Samuel Weir and Elizabeth Vanlandingham (Source: History of Muhlenberg County by Otto A. Rothert, 1913. Pages 58-9). She married 14 February 1838 in Muhlenberg Co., KY, to Thomas Jefferson Rice.

    Thomas J. Rice was born 16 February 1804, the son of Ezekiel Rice and Nancy Ann Watkins. He married (1) Lucinda Rice; married (2) 14 February 1838 to Susan Weir.

    William was born in Prince Edward Co., VA, the son of Matthew Rice.

    William was a Revolutionary War Soldier. He married Frances Grangier Crenshaw of Amelia Co., VA, the daughter of John Crenshaw and Elizabeth Bates.

    William was the son of James W. Rice and Susan Martin. He married 04 November 1863 to Bettie J. Martin.
