Old Liberty Cemetery
Transcribed and contributed by Jean Wells
From Otto A. Rothert's A History of Muhlenberg County (1913):
Page 104: Liberty Church was built by pioneers in the early history of the county - in 1816
Page 85: More people have ancestors buried at Old Liberty than any other grave yard in the county.
Page 108 by Richard T. Martin: Soon after Liberty was built a grave yard was started near the church. This burying-ground has slowly increased, and now a number of the people of the neighborhood, including some of those who attended Liberty school and church during, before, or after my youth sleep within its confines.
From Greenville take Highway 62W to Highway 189. Turn left on Highway 189 and go about 4 miles to the Greens Chapel Road. Turn right on Greens Chapel Road and go about 1 mile. The cemetery is on right side of the road. It is well maintained and still in use. Some of the older stones are so black they cannot be read. Others are broken and on the ground. One has “sisters” on back of the base. The top has fallen and face down with Yucca plants grown up around it.
