Murphy Cemetery

Directions
Take Highway 62W from Greenville to Highway 189, turn left. Go about 4 miles to the Greens Chapel Road and turn right. Go about 6 miles. The cemetery is located on the old Justus Murphey farm, 1.3 miles past Greens Chapel Church, and ¼ mile East of the road.

John Lindsey Spurlin was the son of John Spurlin and Rebecca Utley. He was the husband of Frances Murphey. He drowned in Murphey Lake trying to save a friend. - Jesse Murphey

Jesse Murphey was the son of Thomas Murphey, who died in Pitt Co., North Carolina. Jesse was married three times: (1) Fannie; (2) Polly Cross Randolph 4 March 1824; (3) Susannah Davis 21 September 1837. Susannah D. Murphey married John Arnold 7 August 1855 at Rockport, Indiana.
Jesse Murphey settled this land in 1805 and was one of the well-known early settlers of the neighborhood. The land is still owned by his descendants. - Poly Cross Murphey

Poly was the daughter of William and Rebecca Cross. She married (1) Robert Mason Randolph Sr. 10 November 1809; (2) Jesse Murphey 4 March 1824. - W.O. Randolph

From Otta A. Rothert's A History of Muhlenberg County Page 118:
“The slave referred to was “one Negro woman-Leah” bought on December 5, 1814 for $350.00 by Jesse Murphey who paid about half in cash and the balance in pork and lard.” It is uncertain whether this is the same slave. - Claudie F. Murphey
